Five signs your ServiceNow instance is overdue for a Health Scan

18 Aug 2026 · 6 min read

Most ServiceNow instances don't fail suddenly — they slow down gradually, one workaround at a time. A Health Scan is a structured review of configuration, customization and data quality against ServiceNow's own best-practice benchmarks, and it's the fastest way to separate 'this feels slow' from a prioritized, fixable list.

The first sign is almost always performance: list views that take noticeably longer to load than they did a year ago, or scheduled jobs that regularly overrun their window. The second is technical debt hiding in plain sight — business rules and client scripts that were added for a one-off request and never removed, now firing on every transaction.

The third sign is a CMDB that nobody fully trusts, which quietly undermines every ITOM and ITAM process built on top of it. The fourth is upgrade anxiety — teams delaying releases because nobody is confident what will break. The fifth is simply not knowing your own customization footprint well enough to plan a roadmap.

None of these require a rebuild. A Health Scan produces a prioritized remediation plan — usually a mix of quick wins (weeks) and structural fixes (a quarter or two) — so you're upgrading with confidence instead of hoping for the best.
