Contract, contract-to-hire or permanent: choosing the right staffing model

02 Jul 2026 · 4 min read

Teams often default to whichever staffing model they used last time, even when the requirement has changed. A better starting point is the shape of the work itself.

Contract staffing fits well-defined, time-boxed work — a migration, an implementation phase, or covering a known gap — where the scope and end date are already clear.

Contract-to-hire suits roles where you're confident about the need but want to validate fit — team dynamics, delivery style — before committing to a permanent offer. It also gives the candidate a genuine trial of the role, which tends to improve long-term retention.

Permanent hiring makes the most sense for roles tied to ongoing platform ownership — a ServiceNow platform owner or lead architect who needs to carry institutional context across years, not months.

None of these are mutually exclusive within one team: it's common to combine a permanent platform lead with contract specialists for a specific implementation phase.
